Mecklenburg County has committed to being part of the MacArthur Foundation's Safety and Justice Challenge, a national movement to safely reduce the use of jails and address racial and ethnic disparities in the local criminal justice system.

The Criminal Justice Advisory Group (CJAG) was created in 2005 as an informal forum where criminal justice system leaders engage in systemic planning and coordination.

JCPC reviews the needs of juveniles who are delinquent or at-risk of becoming court-involved.

Mecklenburg County Criminal Justice Services works to improve the criminal justice system. Efforts include promoting collaboration between city, County and state criminal justice agencies, establishing and measuring criminal justice performance measures, managing criminal justice programs and services, and developing initiatives that enhance public safety.  

The Mecklenburg County Opioid and Substance Use Disorder Task Force​ addresses substance use disorders as a public health issue by providing an integrated continuum of care to create a healthy community.

In 2020, Mecklenburg County was awarded an additional $1 million to continue supporting the County's efforts to develop and implement strategies capable of positively impacting the main drivers of the local jail population.
